What is self storage?

What is self storage like?

Our storage rooms are purpose built with sizes ranging from a locker to a small warehouse. It’s a popular and very cost effective way of storing your possessions or stock for short and long periods of time as you can select the perfect size for you meaning you will never be paying for unused space.

The facility is temperature controlled and cared for daily by our onsite team hence the tip top condition its kept in, and for total peace of mind we have installed the latest in smartphone access controls so you can be sure only our customers are accessing our building.

And if you need more… we also have HD full colour CCTV covering every single corridor, smoke and fire sensors and motion detector alarm all of which are monitored 24 hours a day, 365 days a year!

Can I call in to see the rooms?

Absolutely, we love nothing more than showing off our facility. Just pop in store during reception opening hours and we’ll gladly show you around.

What’s the height of your storage rooms?

Our storage rooms are a minimum of 8.5 ft high (excluding lockers).

How much does it cost?

Self-storage prices are calculated on the size of the storage room. A small self-storage room costs less than a bigger sized room.

What’s included in the price – are there any hidden extras?

At Hurstwood Self Store we will always be upfront with you about any charges you may incur.

You will need to budget for:

  • Storage fees - charged monthly/4 weekly and in advance.
  • A security deposit – this charge is dependent on the size of room you take and is usually equivalent to 1 month/ 4 weeks rental fees (inc. VAT), which is 100% refundable when you move out and leave the room empty.
  • Insurance cover - at Hurstwood Self Store your goods must be insured whilst in storage, you can choose to be added to our specialist storage cover which starts at £1 per week for £1,000 cover or you can choose to provide your own like for like cover. Please read through the insurance policy requirements to ensure your possessions are fully covered.
  • Padlock – you will need a padlock to secure your room. Our Padlocks are available to buy in store and are made with a shackle of either hardened steel or brass and are guaranteed to fit our doors. If you are using your own lock please check with the store that it is suitable.

Do I have to pay a deposit?

Yes. All customers are required to pay a refundable security deposit before storing. The amount is dependent on the size room you choose. The deposit is fully refundable provided you have removed all items and left the room clean and empty upon vacating.

What security do you have?

Keeping your possessions safe is the most important job we have!

So we have installed the very latest digital technology meaning you can enter the building using only your smart phone (Pin code and QR code options are available if you prefer). Our security system also has motion, smoke and fire detectors and our HD full colour CCTV covers every single corridor and the whole of the building inside and out which is monitored 24 hours a day, 365 days a year! What size room will I need?

That depends on how much you have to store. You can use our handy size calculator here. Just enter the goods you will be storing and it will show you what room size you need.

How does it work?

  3. Complete the contract and start using your room

Do I need to reserve a room?

Reserving your room in advance is highly recommended to ensure the perfect room choice is available for you when you need it. Whilst we have many rooms, the availability of certain sizes can be limited at busy times.

It also speeds up the move in process when you come to complete your move in.

Can I reserve online?

Yes, you can reserve a room online free of charge. We guarantee your price and room for up to 60 days *Subject to availability.

What happens after I reserve my storage unit?

If you’ve reserved online we will give you a call to ensure you found everything you needed online.

After that, you just need to pop into reception during opening hours anytime before your specified move in date to complete your booking.

When you arrive in-store, you will need:

  • Photo ID – either a passport or full driving licence. See full list of acceptable personal identification
  • Proof of your address – a paper utility bill or bank statement from the last three months. See full list of acceptable address documents
  • A security deposit plus your first months rent in advance. (If you are setting up a direct debit, the deposit will be reduced by 50%. If paying by credit or debit card, the deposit will be four weeks rent).
  • Your bank details and a credit or debit card if you are setting up a direct debit.
  • A Padlock – You will require a padlock to secure your storage room. Our padlocks are available to buy in store and are the most secure with a shackle of either hardened steel or brass and are guaranteed to fit our doors. If you are using your own, please check with the store that it is suitable for use.
  • Insurance cover - We have a new for old specialist storage cover and can add you to our policy. All customers must insure all items to be stored. If you are covered under an existing policy you will need to provide us with a copy of your cover detailing the dates insured, amount and perils covered.

Please note: we are a cashless store so payments can only be made using credit or debit cards.

How far in advance can I book?

Up to six months in advance. Even if you’re not sure of the exact date that you would like to move in please just let us know an estimated start time and update us when you know more. The storage room will be ready when you are. Charges only start from the day that you move in.

What if I have booked and my plans change?

Don’t worry if your plans change, you can amend or cancel your reservation at any time. Just give us a call on 01942 945 051 to discuss your requirements.

Can I cancel my reservation?

Yes, you can cancel at any time and if you’ve paid a reservation deposit that will be refunded in full.

What if I arrive and need a bigger/smaller space?

Not a problem. We’ll move you into a more suited room. We have 14 sizes so I’m sure we’ll find one that suits your needs.

How does your ‘Best Price Guarantee’ work?

If you find a cheaper price elsewhere just bring the quote into us or forward the email quote to us and we’ll beat it. Simple as that.

All that we ask is:

  • It is dated within two weeks of your intended move in date and is produced prior to move in.
  • It must be a like for like competitor with comparable rooms, security features, facilities and situated within 3 miles of the store.
  • Only available on rooms below 200 sq ft.
  • We do not beat quotes from non self storage, such as shipping containers and containerised storage companies.
  • Any quote offered by Hurstwood Self Store will be honoured for seven days.
  • The Best Price Guarantee is for storage only and does not include insurance or packaging materials.
  • Our Best Price Guarantee cannot be used in conjunction with any other promotion or offer.
  • Our Best Price Guarantee is for new customers only.
  • Hurstwood Self Store reserves the right to change or withdraw the Best Price Guarantee at any time.
  • ‘Opening Offers’ from a newly opened competitor will not be accepted under our Best Price Guarantee.
  • The Best Price Guarantee rate is guaranteed for a maximum of twenty-four weeks, after which the storage rate will revert back to our standard rate.

How do I move in?

How do I get my goods to store?

You can transport your goods over time making as many trips as you need. Alternatively, we have agreed discounted removal rates with a highly recommended removal service we can arrange this for you or pass you their details. We can also recommend a local van hire company.

Is there a charge to access my goods and how often can I access them?

Access is free of charge and you have unlimited access during our reception opening hours.

If you need more access, we have extended access rooms that are accessible 7 days a week 7am – 8pm.

I’d like my deliveries sent to store, can you accept these for me?

Absolutely, we have a dedicated secure room where we can take receipt and store your parcels until you’re ready to collect them.

How quickly can I move in?

You can move in straight away. All you need to do is come down to store with your ID, complete your move in and you can start using your room immediately.

Do I pay weekly or monthly?

It’s your choice.

We advertise weekly prices so you can easily see how competitive we are. We can invoice 4 weekly or monthly to suit your needs.

Do I have to pay a deposit?

Yes. You are required to pay a refundable security deposit before storing. The amount is dependent on the room size room. The deposit is fully refundable when you move out providing you have removed all items and your room has been left clean and empty upon vacating.

What documentation do I need to provide?

You are required to provide two forms of ID, one containing your photograph, such as a passport or UK driving licence and a bill or bank statement confirming your current address.

These documents allow us to check:

  • Full name – forenames and surname
  • Signature
  • Date of Birth
  • Full permanent address

You must provide original documents, not photocopies.

  • UK (Channel Islands, Isle of Man or Irish) passport or EU/other nationalities passport. Passports of non-EU nationals, containing stamps, a visa or a UK residence permit showing the immigration status of the holder in the UK.
  • UK full driving licence (or provisional photocard with a passport).
  • A HM Forces photo ID card is acceptable but bear in mind that such cards must be surrendered upon leaving the forces so only those individuals currently in the forces will hold such a card.
  • Student ID cards.

List of acceptable confirmation of address documents

  • Recent utility bill (gas, water, electricity or phone), or a certificate from a utility supplier confirming the arrangement to pay for the services on pre-payment terms at a fixed address. More than one utility bill may be accepted if these are from two different suppliers and utility bills in joint names can be taken.
  • Local authority tax bill (i.e. council tax).
  • Most recent HM Revenue & Customs tax notification (i.e. tax assessment, statement of account, notice of coding).
  • Financial statement (e.g. bank, building society) containing current address.
  • Mortgage statement from a recognised lender.
  • Local council rent card or tenancy agreement.
  • Benefit statement, book or card; or original notification letter from Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) confirming the rights to benefit (e.g. child allowance, pension).
  • Insurance certificate.
  • UK court claim form.
  • TV licence.
  • Company letterheads & Business cards with business addresses shown or Company registration documents.

All identification is done face to face.

What happens if I do not have the required documents?

If you cannot provide the correct documents, unfortunately you will not be able to rent a storage room with us.

Why do I need ID?

For security reasons we need to keep a record of all active customers at all times.

How long can I stay?

How long can I stay?

With our flexible pay as you contracts, you can stay as little or as long as you like. Our minimum stay is 14 days with no limit as to how long you can stay. Do I need to tell you how long I intend to stay?

Absolutely not, rooms are pay as you go and totally flexible meaning you can move in and out whenever you need to. You can also increase or decrease the size of room whenever you like.

What is the minimum stay?

At Hurstwood Self Store as it’s pay as you go, you can stay for as long or as little as you like.

If you are taking advantage of a discounted rental period you must store for a minimum of that period. For example if your first month is 50% off, you must stay for the full month after that you’ll just pay for the days you use.

How can I pay?

You can pay with the following methods:

*If you choose to pay by Direct Debit, we will reduce the initial security deposit by 50%. If you choose to pay via another method, we will still require a deposit of four week’s rental.

When can I access my room?

Access is free of charge and you have unlimited access during our reception opening hours.

Are there toilets at the facility?

Yes, we have customer toilets onsite.

Is there somewhere to dispose of waste?

No. We have no waste disposal service onsite, you are responsible for the removal and disposal of your waste.

Do I need my own padlock?

Yes. Once you have placed your goods in your room you will need to lock it and keep the key. Only you or anyone you have specified can access your goods.

What happens if I lose my padlock key?

Don’t worry, if you can’t find your key. Just pop into reception with your photo ID and we can remove it for you.

Do you have trolleys available?

Yes, we have trolley available for you to use.

Can I move rooms if I need more or less space?

Yes, you can transfer rooms at any time free of charge (subject to availability).

Do I need to insure my goods?

At Hurstwood Self Store the protection of your goods is our number one priority which is why you cannot store without insuring your goods.

We give you the choice:

  • We can add you to our specialist self storage insurance policy that is approved by the Self Storage Association. Your goods will then be covered under a new for old basis. It’s a totally flexible policy that you can increase, decrease or cancel at any time.
  • You may be covered through your own household or business insurance policy, however not all policies cover the same perils specified within a self storage insurance. You will need to check it matches ours and supply us with a copy of your cover detailing the dates insured, amount and perils covered.

How do I value my goods?

As our insurance works on a new for old basis, you will need to declare the value of goods by calculating the cost if you were to buy them all new today.

Moving out

How do I cancel/vacate my storage unit?

Even though we would love you to stay forever, we make it as simple and easy as moving in. Just let us know you’re leaving and we’ll close your account, if you’ve paid ahead we’ll refund you any unused days.

We do require 14 days’ notice before you wish to vacate your unit or 28 days’ notice if you’re a business customer. If you are unable to give this notice, don’t worry, you can still move your goods out but you will still be charged the notice period.

What can and can’t be stored

What items can’t be stored?

You must not store (or allow any other person to store) any of the following in the room:

  • Perishable goods, live animals, living plants.
  • Combustible or flammable substances such as gas, paint, petrol, oil, cleaning solvents or compressed gases.
  • Firearms, Explosives, weapons or ammunition.
  • Chemicals, radioactive materials, biological agents, toxic waste, asbestos or other potentially hazardous substances.
  • Any illegal item or substances or goods illegally obtained such as illicit (counterfeit/smuggled) tobacco or alcohol and unlicensed or unsafe goods.
  • Goods which are environmentally harmful or that are a risk to the property of any person.
  • Currency, deeds and securities.

We always cooperate with the Police and HM Revenue & Customs.

Can I store my pies?

Although we’re trying to use our pie-sonality here, no food can be kept on site 😊.

Business storage

Can I put shelving in my room?

Absolutely, we can supply shelving or you can install your own. Please note, all shelving must be free standing and not fixed to the walls or floor.

Can you take in my deliveries?

Yes, we have a dedicated secure room where we can take receipt and store your parcels until you’re ready to collect them.

Can you help with removals?

Of course, we have agreed discounted removal rates with a highly recommended removal service we can arrange this for you or pass you their details. We can also recommend a local van hire company.

Can I buy boxes and packing materials from you?

Yes! We sell a wide range of boxes, bubble wrap and packaging materials.

Whether you store with us or not, packaging materials can be bought from the reception at the store.
